Hi, I'm Colleen – a certified infant sleep consultant and mum of two!

My initial interest in sleep began many years ago when I completed a degree in Psychology. I learnt about the severe impact of sleep deprivation on both mental and physical well-being, as well as on our ability to function and complete daily tasks. Following on from this I spent some time working in childcare settings before completing a PGCE and training to be a primary school teacher. My years of working with young children and their families gave me a real insight into the detrimental effects of poor sleep on the whole family and the importance of restful nights for all.

In 2017 I became a mum for the first time and sleep deprivation became a reality for my husband and I. Our daughter would fight sleep, wake frequently through the night and our days regularly began as early as 5am. We tried anything we could to get her to sleep – feeding, rocking, singing, but it was no use. We were both exhausted and had no time together as a couple. When our daughter did sleep, we found ourselves on edge, waiting for the next waking. We had little knowledge of sleep training but knew that we weren’t prepared to leave our daughter to “cry it out”.

When our daughter was 11 months we sought help. From the moment she started to sleep through the night we felt like different people. We had more energy to enjoy our days together and we really began to appreciate the small things like being able to watch a movie together in the evenings or order a takeaway.

I remember the feelings of exhaustion and desperation for a solution. I also remember the anxiety I felt about sleep training and leaving our daughter to cry. That’s why as a sleep consultant I only use gentle, supportive training methods in my plans. I believe in effective, gradual methods which allow little ones to develop the skills they need to sleep well with support, allowing them to become independent sleepers when they are ready.

Whatever sleep issues you are currently facing, I am confident that with the right plan we could make significant improvements, resulting in better sleep for all. Sleep deprivation doesn’t have to be a part of your parenting journey.
